Australian Owned & Operated
Half Hunter Pocket Watches have a hinged lid with a window cut into it, so you can read the time without opening the case.
A half hunter has the same hinged lid as a full hunter, with a round window cut through the middle of it. The hour numerals are often set around that window, so you can read the position of the hands with the case still closed, and only open the lid when you want to see the whole dial. It is the compromise style. The glass stays protected in a pocket, but you are not flicking the lid open every time someone asks the time. You will also see the design sold as a demi hunter, which is the same thing under a different name.
Three case styles, and the only real difference is the lid. An open face pocket watch has no cover at all, so the dial is always readable and always exposed. Full Hunter Pocket Watches have a lid closed all the way across, which gives the most protection but has to be opened each time you check the time. A half hunter sits between the two and is usually the safe answer if you are choosing a first pocket watch and cannot decide. The rest of the range is under Vintage Style Pocket Watches.
Almost every half hunter we stock is hand-wound mechanical. Turn the crown clockwise until you feel firm resistance, then stop, and keep to roughly the same time each day so the watch does not run down; there is no battery to replace, and the movement carries a 12-month warranty. Most of these also have a cut-away dial behind the lid, so they double as Skeleton Pocket Watches and you can watch the gears turning through the window. Finishes are plated and tone finishes rather than precious metal, in polished and brushed silver-tone, brass, black and gold-plated.
Half hunters do well as wedding, anniversary and milestone gifts, and our best sellers in this category are the polished silver and brass dial pieces, which suit a waistcoat or a suit pocket without shouting about it. A matching chain is available for every watch and is not included, though orders over $100 receive one free; the full selection is under Pocket Watch Chains. In-stock pieces are dispatched from Brisbane within 1 to 2 business days, free Express Post applies on Australian orders over $60, and unworn watches can be returned within 60 days.
It is a pocket watch with a hinged lid over the dial and a round window cut into the centre of that lid. The hour numerals are usually set around the window, so you can read roughly where the hands are without opening the case. Open the lid and you get the full dial, the same as any hunter.
A hunter has a hinged metal lid covering the dial, which you open to read the time and close to protect the glass in a pocket. An open face has no lid, so the dial is permanently on show and the watch is quicker to read but more exposed. A half hunter is the middle option: the lid stays, but a window in it lets you read the time with the case shut.
Choose a full hunter if you want maximum protection for the glass and enjoy the moment of springing the lid open. Choose a half hunter if you want the same protection but would rather glance at the time without opening anything. Full hunters are the more traditional look, half hunters the more practical one, and both are worn on a chain in the same way.
Yes, they are two names for the same case design, and you will see both used across the market. Some of the watches in this category are named as demi hunters and some as half hunters, but the construction is identical: a hinged lid with a window cut into it. Nothing about the movement or the wearing of the watch changes with the name.
Not from this category at the moment. Engraving is offered only on the pieces in our Engravable Pocket Watches range, and no half hunter is currently set up for it. If a personalised message matters more than the case style, start with that range instead; engraving is done on the case back, up to 30 characters, and adds 2 to 4 business days.

Half Hunter Pocket Watches have a hinged lid with a window cut into it, so you can read the time without opening the case.
The hour numerals are often set around that window, which is why the style is also sold as a demi hunter. Almost every half hunter we stock is hand-wound mechanical, and most pair the window with a cut-away skeleton dial, so the movement shows through as well. Finishes include polished and brushed silver-tone, brass, black and gold-plated.
It is a sensible middle ground if a full lid feels like a fuss and an open face feels unprotected, and it is a steady choice for wedding and milestone gifts. In-stock pieces are dispatched from Brisbane within 1 to 2 business days, with free Express Post on Australian orders over $60.
